21 Reflections On My WAHM Journey

21 Reflections On My WAHM Journey | What I've learned since transitioning from Stay At Home Mom to Work At Home Mom #wahm #sahm #mompreneur #makemoneyathome #workingmom #homeschoolmom

What I’ve Learned Since Becoming a WAHM

Becoming a Work At Home Mom (WAHM) is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s a blessing to be present with my family while pursuing entrepreneurship. From the beginning, choosing to work has been about much more than money. Working at home has been a challenging endeavor that has helped me to rediscover who I am. Recently, I spent some time reflecting on exactly how my life has changed since I began this journey. Here are a few of the realizations I had.

How My Work Affects Me

1. I feel like myself again – It’s refreshing to be known as Tiffany rather than so-and-so’s wife or so-and-so’s mommy. 2. I’ve Opted Out of the Mommy Wars – I don’t feel the pressure to choose a side in the Mommy Wars. I’m living my life on my own terms and I’m pleased with it. 3. Discovering strengths and talents I never knew I had – I’ve had to step outside of my comfort zone in order to get my business off the ground. This has required a lot of creativity and grit that I likely never would’ve known I had otherwise. 4. I value myself a lot more – I never would’ve dreamed of asking an employer to pay me what I charge people now. I know my worth. 5. Some days, I want to quit – When I’m sick, when I’m behind on housework, when I’ve had a not-so-good experience with a client, or when I’ve been battling nausea (hello, pregnancy) I have to remind myself exactly why I’m doing all of this. In the end, I realize how much happier I am, and I find the will to keep going. 6. Self Care is more important than ever – With such a full plate, it’s tempting to skip my self care rituals in order to have a little more time to put towards knocking out my to-do list. However, self care is critical to managing my anxiety, so I can’t afford to put myself last. 7. I’ve had to learn how to manage my anxiety all over again – Work At Home Entrepreneurship has both increased my anxiety and helped me to confront it at the same time. I’ve had to manage anxiety about monetizing my blog, about becoming more visible online, about being on the phone, and about ensuring my children don’t feel abandoned because of my work responsibilities. 8. I had to mourn the loss of my free time – I always thought I was so busy until I began working at home more. As a freelance writer, I worked when I felt like it, so I never felt much pressure outside of deadlines. Now with a service-based business and regular clients, I’ve had to show up more. Initially, this threw me into a mild panic because rather than feeling the freedom I desired as a WAHM entrepreneur, I felt trapped! Since then, I’ve had a mindset shift, and I enjoy the structure that working at home provides. 9. Working in PJs is a terrible idea – It sounds ideal, but the few times I’ve done it, it makes me feel like my day hasn’t truly started. Since I homeschool, I like for us to all get ready for the day first thing because it helps my kids make the mental switch to focus on school. Getting myself ready for the day, makeup and jewelry included, helps me to get my own mind in the zone to work. 10. Perfectionism is a waste of time – Being overly critical of myself and my work is second nature. I’m slowly learning it’s better to start, even if it’s imperfect, than to wait and waste time pursuing perfectiom. 11. I experienced a Freshman 15+ – Working more has meant more time at my desk early in the morning and sometimes late at night. There was a time when I was drinking lots of coffee and eating more snacks while I worked, which meant the scale started to creep up. In order to turn things around, I purchased a Fitbit and I’ve been working on improving my health and figure. Since I’m pregnant again, I don’t expect to lose weight yet, but I know focusing on fitness now will make it easier for me to drop the weight after the baby comes. 12. Ongoing learning is a part of the deal – The key to successfully running a home business is to commit to learning all the time, at least one hour each day. Technology and best practices change constantly, so it’s necessary to keep studying in order to be an asset to clients.

How My Work Affects My Family

13. I have more to talk about with my husband – Before I began working at home, my husband wasn’t always as eager to discuss work with me. I worked when I met him, of course, but I was in a different field. Now that he has had a chance to see my growth during this journey, I find that he and I spend more time discussing things like marketing and organizational psychology. It’s been a lot of fun! 14. My slow cooker is my best friend – I can afford to order in more and some days I do. But it’s ultimately not good for our budget or my waistline. My slow cookers enable me to make tasty, homecooked meals for my family without spending excessive time in my kitchen. 15. I’m teaching my children the value of hard work – Whenever I’m paid, I treat my children to a small gift. I explain to them that the time I spent working was so that I could buy them a toy. I won’t do this forever, but doing this now helps my children to connect the dots between work and having things. They understand money doesn’t grow on trees, it’s earned. 16. It’s easy to become a shoemaker – It can be tempting to shuffle around my schedule to meet a work deadline or to make a few more tweaks to my blog. But I know that my family would begin to resent me if I begin to push them aside in favor of my work. If I fell into that trap, I’d also begin to resent myself. 17. Free time is more precious to me – It’s so sweet to take breaks and spend my time just hanging out with my babies. The other night, I spent 30 minutes or so watching my babies dance to the Pink Fong Baby Shark Special. In the past, I would’ve tried to multitask to make that time worthwhile, but just sitting there watching my children groove was plenty for me.

How to do Market Research

But how can you know whether your customer is interested if you haven’t officially opened your business? The answer is simple: market research. Market research is a process of gathering information about your ideal customer so that you can better understand their needs, their existing options, and whether your product or service is a worthwhile solution.

How My Work Affects Others

18. I’m making an impact – I’ve been able to connect with some amazing women from around the world. It’s so incredible to hear just how my work is influencing others! 19. I’m making friends with really cool women – I love meeting readers and developing friendships with women like me who want more for their lives and for their families. 20. Some prospective clients react badly when they discover I have children at home – I’ve run into a little bit of resistance from people when they’ve discovered I have small children at home, even if it doesn’t affect my ability to work. It’s prejudice, plain and simple…and I’m actually grateful for it because it’s an easy way to weed out people with whom I’d rather not be in a partnership. 21. Working at home can be a lonely road – Unlike working in an office full time, I don’t have the watercooler type of community that other working mamas have. I don’t have much time for mommy groups and I have to occasionally turn down friends because I’m busy growing my business, tending to my family, and running my household. However, these are temporary sacrifices I’m making for my future. My goal is to open my own agency by the time I’m ready to give birth. Having an employee or two will help me to scale my efforts and reclaim my time.
